There is one way to get a motorcycle noticed -- build something everyone wants to look at. A motorcycle company called Ironworks, based out of Bradenton, Florida, wanted to get its name out there, so it decided to build bikes that would catch the public's eye.
For this project, the Ironworks crew started out with one of its '03 Pro-Street single-downtube frames, stretched it 5 inches up and out, and then raked the neck to 42 degrees to give it some chopper geometry. The cool thing about the single downtube is that it also acts as an oil cooler. Mounted to the neck is an 8-over inverted Spyke frontend. Ironworks makes its wheels in-house, so to give this chopper mobility, it pulled a 21-inch front and an 18-inch rear wheel out of its stock. Avon rubber wraps both the wheels, with a big, fat 250 in the rear. Stopping power comes in the form of a Legends USA caliper in the front and an HHI drive-side caliper in the rear.
Once the bike became a roller, it needed a motor. Ironworks keeps a few motors on hand at the shop and there just happened to be a polished 100ci RevTech waiting to power a motorcycle. The all-RevTech motor is complemented by the addition of a Mikuni 42mm carburetor, a Forcewinder vertical air cleaner, a Crane Hi-4 ignition, and Grumpy's Hellfire exhaust pipes. Finishing off the drivetrain components is a polished RevTech enclosed primary with a Rivera Primo clutch that transfers power to the polished '03 five-speed transmission.
Sheetmetal was the next task for the Ironworks staff, and it was going to be easy. Ironworks fabricates much of the sheetmetal for each of its bikes, so the crew used its own rear fender, with internal struts, and stretched an oil bag that matches the lines of the rigid. Up front, a Russ Wernimont Cobra fender was used along with a gas tank from Independent.
With the sheetmetal accounted for and fit to the frame, it was time to get some paint on the bike. Ironworks sent the frame, oil bag, fenders, and gas tank to G&T Graphics and Customs for generous coats of orange and purple that really call attention to the bike.
When the painted pieces arrived at the Ironworks shop, it started the final assembly and added the necessary accessories. Ironworks bars were mounted to the triple trees that are home to a Dakota Digital gauge, O.M.P. hand controls, and a Ness headlight. Foot controls and pegs are Legends USA units. The license mount, oil cooler, and seat were all constructed by Ironworks.
All in all, the build was a complete success and the bike runs great. We saw the bike cruising around Daytona and had to get it shot for the magazine -- we guess its plan worked!
