Royce Palau of High Point, North Carolina, had always owned custom bikes, but they all lacked something. He knew this time he wanted a really fast bike with a set of cool wheels and outstanding paint. Royce also needed his wife, Heather, to be able to ride with him.
With this in mind, Royce went to the place where he knew his vision could come together, Kendall Johnson Customs. Royce had been a customer of Kendall's before, and knew Kendall would build the right bike to make him - and Heather - happy. Kendall started with a big, unassembled 113ci S&S motor. The heads were ported and equipped with Headquarters valves, and he installed a custom grind cam and carefully balanced the package before reassembly. A Wimmer velocity stack was used to provide air to the S&S carburetor, and a set of Grumpy's pipes would get rid of it. To get all that power to the right place, a Kenny Boyce primary open beltdrive with Barnett clutch was used to link the engine to the Baker six-speed trans.
In the frame department, Kendall knew how to keep this one-of-a-kind style going. A KJC frame with 44 degrees of rake, 6 inches of downtube stretch, and 4 extra inches in the backbone was used to get the bike to sit level. A set of Ness 12-inch-over legs and trees were installed on the neck, and a Legend Air Ride suspension was used to keep the wide KJC swingarm off the ground, but just barely. Now, with a lot of room for rubber, a big 250 Avon rear tire was placed on an 18x9 Independent Cycle wheel. To match it up, a lean 21x2.5 Independent Cycle front wheel with an Avon tire was used, and both are stopped with P.M. brakes.
Royce and Kendall both knew they still had a long way to go, so fenders from Fat Katz, an Independent Cycle gas tank, and a cap from HotMatch Custom Cycles would start the sheetmetal. It seemed like days were spent working all the metal into flowing panels, but it was worth it. Kendall turned the bike over to Copperhead for some serious molding and wild paint. When it finally came back, Kendall realized he still had to drill it to make room for Heather's footpegs, but the bike was finally ready for reassembly. CCI handlebars were put in Accutronix risers with Ness hand controls on the ends. Then, Accutronix foot controls, a Lazer Star headlamp, and a CCI taillamp were affixed. Kendall topped it all off with a High Roller seat.
In the end, just a short six months later, Royce was very happy with the finished product. He and Heather now enjoy long rides on the open road. She has footpegs, but they are still talking about a seat for her.
