It's tough fulfilling other people's dreams day in and day out, and never taking the time to chase your own. If you don't believe us, just ask Travis Hill, owner of X-Treme Motorcycle Design in Orange, California, what his days are like. Every morning he rolls into his shop, drops the kickstand on his runaround stocker, and gets to work designing and building frames and rolling chassis kits for people all over the country, making their dreams come true.
But what about Travis' dreams? It just didn't make sense that he built all these great-looking rolling chassis kits, yet rolled around on a stock machine. Something needed to be done, and he knew that his nights and weekends were about to get used up transferring the motor from his current bike into a bike he was really proud of. After all, if his customers could do it, why shouldn't he?
The first thing he did was pull out the 80ci Evo motor and hand it over to one of his in-house guys, Mad Jack. He tore it down to the cases to have everything polished and then to do some hop-up work. When the motor was brilliantly shining, Jack did some headwork, cleaned up the valves, and installed a Crane cam and ignition to combine with the Mikuni carb and Joker velocity stack he had picked out.
During the motor-build time, Travis dropped an X-Treme HT Chopper frame on a bench. It featured a whopping 42 degrees of rake with 6 inches of upward stretch, balanced by 3 more inches in the backbone. Travis connected a set of his 6-degree trees and a 12-inch-over fork with X-Treme lowers to the gusseted neck, and stood back to look at the shape. He knew the bold stance required a bold wheel, so a set of X-Treme eight-spokes were pulled out of stock. Set up with matching rotors and pulley, along with P.M. calipers, the 21-inch front and 18x8.5 rear were covered with Metzeler tires.
Travis went back to the parts shelves and pulled down one of his gas tanks that featured a HotMatch pop-up gas cap. Then, a matching oil tank and an 11-inch fender with internal struts came out of the parts inventory. He mounted it all on the frame and took a good look at what he had, a really good-looking rolling chassis. The hot rod 80-incher, with a Baker six-speed and Billet-4-U primary, were installed, and the whole bike taken to Matt Hotch at HotMatch Custom Cycles.
Matt wired the bike and built all the hard lines for the oil and hydraulics. Then, he added a few extra touches in the fit of everything before helping strip it all back down for Travis' friend Butch to put some color on it. Butch applied the Kandy-Green base and then some hot-rod style orange flames.
At last Travis was close to riding his new pride and joy. All it took was matching the P.M. hand and foot controls up to Matt's hard lines, adding a Lazer Star headlamp, Leo's taillamp, and Bitchin' Rich seat. He swung the HotMatch kickstand up, blipped the throttle to wake up the HotMatch pipes, and hit the streets of Orange County, never to blend in again.
