By now, everyone is familiar with Exile Cycles in Sun Valley, California. However, you might not be familiar with the bald-headed guy who's always in the background. Well, that guy's name is Johnny Goodson, and in January of 2004 Johnny and Russell Mitchell went their separate ways. At that point, Johnny had a lot of decisions to make. Should he stay in California and work for another builder? Stay in California and start up his own shop? Or return to Phoenix and start his own shop? Due to the high price of real estate in California, the decision became clear that he'd return to where the insanity started: Arizona. A few months later, Insane Custom Cycles was born.
The bike featured here was built for a guy named Josh Gould. Josh wanted a straightforward, no-nonsense, custom motorcycle but wanted it more customized to him than the current market was offering. He came to Insane with a definite frame manufacturer in mind, a Redneck frame with massive tubing. Johnny sat Josh on his personal bike and took measurements - where he wanted his feet and hands and just basically how he wanted to sit on this dream machine. Then, Johnny picked up the phone, called Redneck, and gave them the dimensions. Once the frame was physically on-hand, the fun began.
To save on the cost of this motorcycle, Josh decided to go with a stock 80ci Harley-Davidson Evo motor and five-speed transmission. Johnny gets about 96 hp with small engine modifications such as cam pushrods, carburetor, and pipes. Josh didn't want bolt-on pipes, so Johnny fabricated a custom set that complemented the flow of the motorcycle. With Josh being a fan of imports, he liked the idea of a low-profile rear wheel and wanted an Exile sprocket brake kit. This kit can only be obtained through Exile (or Insane). The rear wheel is a 240 Metzeler with an 18x8 wheel, and to complement the rear wheel a 21-inch Metzeler on a 21x3-1/2 was used in the front.
To attach the front wheel, Insane used stock Harley-Davidson sliders with 10-inch-over-stock tubes mounted in a set of Insane Custom Cycle triple-trees. Insane fabricates a super clean set of trees with no neck stem nut or fork cap nut visible from the top of the trees with 3 degrees of rake. Mounted on the trees is a set of handlebars fabricated by Johnny out of 1-1/4 stainless steel made to fit Josh's measurements and comfort zone. Under the handlebars sits a 4.2-gallon gas tank to make for a comfortable distance ride without the pesky issue of stopping for gas every 50 miles. Josh also wanted the ability to take home girlies from the pub, so Johnny fabricated flipout passenger pegs and a custom sissy bar.
