And so did Ed. He asked Trevor which bars he had planned for "Ed's new bike," and Trevor responded with, "Z-bars. I've always liked them, and that's what I want." Ed was very put out by this statement and vowed that the Z-bars would be the first thing that came off the bike when it was his. Trevor put his nose back to the grindstone and got to work on what he was still certain was his bike.
The Z-bars and controls came together, and after that the bike was torn down for finishing. Trevor sent the frame, tanks, and fenders to Chad Pevey in Jacksonville, Illinois, for some Pagan Gold paint. Once painted, the skin went to Marty Harp in Mason City, Illinois, and while that was happening, the fork lowers, motor, and foot controls went to Powder Coating Solutions, where Mike and Steve gave each piece either the gloss-coat or wrinkle-black treatment. While all of this was happening, RHC made a set of "wrong side" pipes ceramic-coated in black to complement the motor.
A little while later everything came back, and Trevor put it all together, then rolled it out of the shop and rode it home to show his pregnant wife, Angie, who delivered their son shortly thereafter, thus seriously cutting down on Daddy's available riding time. Winter passed, and as spring sprung he looked forward to riding again.
That's when Ed called and asked if he could ride the chopper down to Fast Eddie's for a burger. Trevor gave a very reluctant yes; after all, he'd yet to take a long ride on the bike himself. When the bike came back it was washed, waxed, and gassed up. "You didn't have to do that, Ed," Trevor told his buddy.
"Yes, I did," Ed responded. "I don't like to see my bike dirty."
Trevor told him it wasn't for sale, since he hadn't really ridden it himself yet. About a week later, he and Angie got to take it out for a nice long run. There were a few other rides, but as spring surrendered to summer, business ran up and put a damper on Trevor's riding time.
Consequently, the bike sat in the corner, looking lonely-until one day when Ed walked in and, without a word, slapped a stack of cash down on the counter, pushed the bike out, and rode it off. After months of determined pestering, he finally had the chopper. Say what you want about Ed, but you can't say he's one to pass up a golden opportunity.
