2006 Kennedy High School Chopper Class with Kevin Baas The 2006 Donnie Smith Invitation bike show in St. Paul, MN had some of the best bikes in the midwest, but one of the biggest attractions came from a bike built entirely by a small public high school in Bloomington, Minnesota. The students involved in Kevin Baas' Chopper Project utilized donations and hand-built parts to wow the crowd with a truly unique one of a kind old school-styled bobber. The project started with Sucker Punch Sally donating one of their working man's special packages. From there, Spartan Frameworks sent a riveted Springer frontend that is not only a high quality piece but also became the inspiration for many of the hand-made riveted parts used on the bike.
Instructor Kevin Baas said, "We were still throwing around ideas for how we wanted the build to look, but when that awesome Springer arrived we knew a riveted industrial monster had to be made."
Paul Cox donated the dished gas tank, and with the speedster gas cap from Crime Scene Choppers, the bike was starting to take shape. After welding in the new gas cap, the riveted look was incorporated by the students with some riveted rings attached to the dished sections of the tank. Once that was complete the fender struts were hand made in class by the kids to perfectly match the Springer with the same thicknesses of steel and rivet sizes. A fab Kevin double shot tag light was donated as well as the stainless steel riveted oil tank kit from Lucky Charm Choppers, and the bike began to really look like a winner.
