It seems like the East Coast has lived in the shadows of the West Coast when it comes to chopper culture of late, and to a large degree it’s probably for good reason. Maybe it’s a weather thing, who knows… It’s definitely not for a lack of effort, though. There’s a lot of great motorcycle history that came out of the East Coast, and continues to flourish. Lately, it seems as though the East Coast has come alive again, mostly due to the driven folks who live and die the chopper culture—this is how Death Science was born, and how it will die.
It started in Tim Lind and Matt Briel’s garage, with the necessity for a taillight, and a solid understanding of resin and fiberglass casting. Word got out and it turned into more taillights, and then shift knobs, air cleaners, some aluminum cast parts, and even some hand-made stainless steel parts. It has been said by many that riding a bike is “cheating death,” and they feel like there’s a science to this game we’re all playing; hence a name was penned. But the intent was never to be a full-blown parts company. First and foremost, Death Science is a crew of friends with a strong co-op mentality. Each member of the Death Science crew brings something to the table in the way of a skill, trade, or service (including Jay’s ability to land any critter chick this side of the Mason-Dixon line).
The Death Science crew is spread all over the East Coast, with family in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and New York. Some have been friends for years while others of us have only known each other for a few months. Essentially, the headquarters of sorts is in North Carolina at The Lab.
Whenever possible, the Death Science crew tries to involve themselves in every event they can along with the Hated of The World crew, the Freak Out the Squares crew, Cut Rate crew, and the Low Side Syndicate. In the end, Death Science is just a bunch of friends, and what drives them is the passion for all things chopper. The kind of passion that keeps you awake at night and pisses your lady off to no end.
