The history of the XL pretty much goes like this; it was once a bike that beat the British and Japanese imports of the late '50s and '60s. It was later deemed feminine or beginner by Big Twin owners. It has since taken on a highly sought-after place in the world of custom fabrication. After all, what other bike can be readily found at a good price with tons of parts available?
a
Photo Gallery: 1976 Harley Davidson Sportster - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1976 Harley Davidson Sportster - Street Chopper Magazine

1976 Harley Davidson Sportster | Passing Gas |

For Warren Heir Jr., from Jr.'s Cycle Products, his 1951 Panhead's gas tank served as the kick-off for his inspiration. Warren explains how the tank on his Panhead came about, "It's easy to build a bike and make it look nice with new chrome and paint. It is real difficult to make a bike look like it has been sitting for years in a certain configuration. I had wanted to build a bike just around that tank and the old original lacquer paint on it. Dammit I love that tank."
a
Photo Gallery: 1951 Custom Built Panhead - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1951 Custom Built Panhead - Street Chopper Magazine

1951 Custom Built Panhead | Rolling Gold |

I have also been blessed to ride my creations on trips with friends and form memories I will never forget. I've watched the imposters that were sucking the motorcycle industry start to leave because there was no more to take, and I've watched what I believe to be the true motorcycle enthusiast stay and harness the spirit of what this shit is really all about; building your own motorcycle, riding it, breaking it, and fixing it. There are no problems on the road due to the fact that all my breakdowns (on the bike and in my mind) are my best stories told. Stray outside the accepted norm and you might be scolded for not following protocol. In person, T-Bone from Noise Cycles is a man of few words, instead opting to show you what he thinks before telling you. "As much as I don't like talking to people, I love to listen to people talking about my bike. I feed off that. It makes me feel like I do something different. I like people doing a double take. That's the way I try to build a bike. I don't want to talk about it, but I like to hear about it. That handbook drives me nuts and it's out there and I don't want any part of it."
a
Photo Gallery: Custom Harley Davidson Pan Shovel | Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: Custom Harley Davidson Pan Shovel | Street Chopper Magazine

Custom Harley Davidson Pan Shovel | Anti-Textbook Build |

A deal was struck and I was happy as could be."
It was a Sunday in January of 2010 that my friend Danny told me about this Panhead that he knew about that was sitting in a guy’s garage a few towns over from where I live. He got me pretty stoked on this thing and just recently reminded me of how I called him about four times that week making sure that we could go check it out the following Sunday worried that someone else was going to go scoop this thing up. I didn’t really have the cash to make a move on it, so I did what any responsible person would do when encountered with a situation like I was in: I borrowed money from my brother Zach. The following Sunday came and I went to meet the previous owner of my Panhead with a pocket full of cash. A deal was struck and I was happy as could be. I got it running that summer the way that it was, similar to this style, but with true patina. That first winter I couldn’t keep my hands off of it and tore it down for some 88-inch S&S stroker treatment and a quick black paintjob. My goal was to build something quick that had the ability to run with new bikes. After riding it that summer, I still yearned to have it finished to the quality it is today, which brought a lot of work for the winter of 2011. But becoming trendy or in fashion goes against everything that chopper building is about. As the popularity grows more and more in the mainstream media, the prices of old motors and parts rises making them less affordable to those that actually know how to work on them. Shit, it takes several thousand dollars just to get a roller and motor these days! But what about all those Evo motors that are sitting in busted up bikes and back yard garages? Bobby Middleton of King Kustoms and Hotrods in Lombard, Illinois, did what any true hot rod builder would do and bucked the trendy power plants and built him a proper chopper using one of those good reliable motors. Enter Dago Deadeye.
a
Photo Gallery: King Kustoms' Evo - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: King Kustoms' Evo - Street Chopper Magazine

King Kustoms' Evo Build | Dago Deadeye |

I was checking the classifieds and came across this guy Gil’s badass little BSA oil-in-frame roller on Chopcult. It had a cool stance and rad mag wheels. I thought to myself “Man! I see a tough little Mad Max Bonneville racer! You never really see a wild setup on an oil-in-frame.” Slim Fab did a great job setting up the roller, so I was pumped. It turned out that the owner and I had a few mutual friends and he had a sporty project that he needed painted. I own Headcase Kustom Art, so getting the paint for Gil was easy, but getting it on trade was key for me. After some negotiations Gil had a paint trade and I had a BSA basket case project. I went to find a motorcycle salvage yard in my area and stumbled on a gem in North Hollywood called Johnson and Wood. This place is a Mecca for used Japanese parts. Since the wheels were XS650 fronts I figured I would use as many Japanese parts as I could to give direction other than using obvious British parts. I knew I wanted it to look as tough as possible.
a
Photo Gallery: BSA Custom Chopper - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: BSA Custom Chopper - Street Chopper Magazine

BSA Custom Chopper | Headcase Chop |

That image stuck with me and the idea of what I thought of as the ultimate bike stuck with me as well. Over time, I scoured the contents of old chopper rags and found myself coveting specific components. My original image eventually became more defined. I began collecting parts for this bike long before it came into my possession. Parts came through swap meets, eBay, and hounding friends to let go of certain gems from their own personal stashes.
a
Photo Gallery: 1976 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Custom - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1976 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Custom - Street Chopper Magazine

1976 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Custom | Booger Sugar |

After the money made it into his hand, a plan was made and the end result is this beautiful Triclops Knucklehead.
I’m a dreamer. For me, getting my hands on a knucklehead was always one of those things that I thought would never happen. Not that it’s impossible or scary, it’s just that it’s kind of a bump up into the big leagues and I’ve always considered myself more on the slow-pitch girls softball level. So when I caught wind of this bike, I kept quiet for a minute trying to see if I could pull it off on my own. I then realized that I’m broke and it just wasn’t going to happen. That’s when I hit up one of my best buds, Craig. He’s the brains in the group and is also a money hoarder. It’s not that he’s rich, he just sucks at spending money. After some serious debating, Craig decided to just loan me the money so I could make my dream come true. Without a doubt, it was one of the gnarliest things anyone has ever done for me. Other standouts of the bike are the modified 350 Yamaha gas tank, 16/19-inch wheel choice, and Aee springer, headlight, and seat—that was covered in crushed velvet. It took Tom five months to turn the box-stock hunk of parts into the swell machine you see here. The bike cost him $1,500 and all he put into it was another $1,500 making this one hell of deal even in the early’70s. This machine truly is yet another sweetheart from the Street Chopper archives!
a
Photo Gallery: 1969 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead - Street Chopper Magazine

Photo Gallery: 1969 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead - Street Chopper Magazine

1969 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead | From The Archives |
