Greg's Bike'93 883cc Sporty Case Cutting
In the exciting previous installment of Street Chopper's Editor Build-off, I modified a JIMS XL motor stand to support a Sporty motor with the rear mounts removed. This incredible issue reveals how well the stand worked - and how to lose the tail-end of a Sporty case at the same time.
Cutting the Sporty case was surprisingly easy (for the record, I practiced on a busted set first), as no special tools were required. I used a Sawzall for all of the work and occasionally sprayed liberal amounts of WD-40 as a lubricating cutting fluid on the blade. Two different-sized metal-specific cutting blades were used, a 5-inch and a 9-inch, depending on the angle of the cut. And before I pulled the trigger on the Sawzall, I made sure the JIMS stand was absolutely secured to the workbench.
I don't want to sound like your mother, but if you do a job like this don't forget protective gear - at least some eye protection, a face shield or a moustache, and a pair of gloves. The aluminum shavings created from the speed of the saw shoot out everywhere (including into your eyes) and the sharp edges of the motor's gasket surfaces and the edges created from the cuts made with a Sawzall could slice your hands to ribbons... on second thought, maybe you shouldn't try this at all (but I hope you do anyway).
